In the first quarter of this year, fraudsters attempted to extort (wyłudzić) a total sum of 100 million zloty (roughly 25 million euro) from banks, a new report released by the Polish Bank Association shows.

The figure is higher than that in the same period of 2009 by over a 25 percent.
Over 2,100 attempts at extorting credits by individuals using stolen ids have been foiled (stopped) within the first three months of 2010.

The fraud rate is highest for the Małopolska province in southern Poland, with the sum of foiled attempts reaching 51,000 zloty (about 13 million euro).

Stolen identity documents are usually used for extorting credit loans, the purchase of mobile phones and for conducting a variety of transactions, such as concluding lease contracts, the report shows.

These statistics are quite shocking. Our personal information does not seem to be safe at all. It can be easily hacked or stolen. What can we do to protect ourselves and to deter (stop) these crimes?

Have your say!

In my opinion this statistics only shows that’s our banks are week protected.Banks doesn’t check person well but they agains between themselvs who gives quicker credit loan.

There are many things that cause this situation. Today its really easy to get a bank loan, all we need is an ID card. We show the ID card to a bank worker and we get a loan. Also many people use fake ID’s to buy for example electronic equipment. In shops like Saturn or Media Markt all we have to do is show an ID and pay the first installment and we’ve got an item for 1/12 of the retail price. The only way to prevent such crimes is to guard our belongings because if we lose our ID and someone else finds it, he can use it to make a fake one.

I think that everything is because of the system of procedures in banks. There is not enough precautions and employess dont know how to recognize such a situation. First of all banks should more carefully checked all information about the person that they want to give a loan.
